Local band The New Thoughts confirmed for Tom Vek support slot

The New Thoughts, based in Truro and Falmouth, have been confirmed as the winners in a competition to find a local band to support London musician Tom Vek at his upcoming show at the Falmouth Princess Pavilions this Friday.

The band, who are inspired by various sources such as dark popsters Interpol and Bloc Party have been playing together for around a year and are said to be “over the moon” at winning the competition.  A 5 piece, consisting of Jack Lang (rhythm guitar and vocals), Tom Brigden (lead guitar), Alex Kendall (keyboards), Charlie Hocking (bass) and Dan Sanderson (drums), the band were an obvious choice for this slot from over 20 entries which came in as a response to a competition from local promoters SW1.

Susie Moore of SW1 Productions said of the competition “We were thrilled to get such a fantastic response from local bands to the competition.  The selection of acts was amazingly diverse and goes to show what a melting pot of talent we have down here.  The New Thoughts were definitely the most relevant of the acts that were submitted and we are really pleased that Tom picked them for the slot”.

Three of the band members have only just left Cornwall in order to go to college in London, so will be returning home rather sooner than they’d planned!

The prize is a slot on the Falmouth leg of Tom Vek’s national tour, to promote his debut album “We Have Sound” – a showcase of Tom’s own brand of guitar-based electro pop, which he himself has titled “geek funk”.  Containing elements of electronica, and low-fi funk, Vek is building himself a solid fanbase despite only recently making it on to the ranks of mainstream radio, amidst comparisons to Talking Heads and Beck and a “genius” title from the NME.

Further support comes from solo act Sonny and the evening will also feature the “We Have Sound System” – where gig-goers can vote for the tracks they want to hear between acts by voting on the We Have Sound forum via Tom’s website www.tomvek.tv

Tickets are £7.50 (subject to booking fees) and are available from the Princess Pavilions Box Office on 01326 211222, Solo Records in Truro, Jam in Falmouth 01326 219123 and www.seetickets.com (0871 2200260).
